For those of us that enjoy a lush green lawn, free organic fertilizer is the way to go. Yes, free. White clover happens to be the 'free' organic fertilizer. You may think it as a weed; however, clover is in the legume family, like alfalfa and fava bean. Thay actually absorb nitrogen from the air and store it in its roots. As the roots die back the nitrogen is released back into the soil. How is that for free fertilizer?
Did you know to get two pounds of nitrogen per 1000 square feet, or half the recommended nitrogen per year all you need is a lawn containing 5% clover, and by mulching your lawn clippings and leaving on the lawn after mowing, you may not have to apply any other nitrogen fertilizer source.
Should you see white clover in your lawn, embrace it and nurture it. It's a good sign of a healthy lawn.
If you would like to improve your lawn the organic way you can purchase seed from Gardener's Supply Co. www.gardeners.com .
